Sam Leong is a familiar and friendly face at Villa Caritas in Edmonton, where he’s been a driver for 10 years.
Villa Caritas is home to the acute inpatient geriatric psychiatry program, which provides psychiatric treatment for a broad range of acute psychiatric problems.
Sam is responsible for transporting patients to various offsite treatment appointments, such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
He always shows respect in his day-to-day interactions because he knows the importance of patients being able to maintain their dignity and feeling like their voices are heard.
“I think everyone deserves respect. Sometimes people just need to be listened to. Whether I agree with what they’re saying or not, I always listen.”
Sam sees the value of his work as his passengers clearly enjoy the change of scenery when being driven around. “I can see it in their faces. They’re in a vehicle, and they’re happy to see the outside world.”
Sam was surprised but grateful that he had been nominated in the Respect category of the 2022 Covenant Mission Awards. “I was able to watch the awards on Zoom, and it was amazing to see the hard work people put in at all the different roles.”
Known as a bright light by patients and staff, Sam has a friendliness and enthusiasm that stem from his passion for the job. “I love what I do. Honestly, it’s a great job.”
