Originally from Edmonton, Aubrie Coleman fell in love with Camrose during her RN preceptorship at St. Mary’s Hospital. The community left an impression on her, and after graduation she took a position working in the hospital’s emergency department.
Three years later, Aubrie is confident that her choice to work in a rural hospital has given her opportunities she may not have had in urban hospitals.
“One of the biggest draws to working in rural emergency is that I was able to care for more acute patients. I was using my skills and learning a lot quicker than I would in the city, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have been mentored by some really excellent nurses to get to where I am now.
“The work is different. You rely on one another and yourself to meet people’s needs without having all of the specialties you’d find in the city. In the emergency department, you also take on the role of connecting people with resources in the community. You get to know a lot of the patients and build relationships with them and your coworkers. I think it’s nice to establish that rapport with people.
“You often meet people on the worst day of their life, and we just try and get them through it. We try to pull positives out of every situation for people.”
“I find at St. Mary’s we work very closely with so many disciplines, like X-ray and radiology, hospitalists, lab, physicians, OT, PT, psychiatric nurses, etc. They are all so willing to help and it does take all of those disciplines coming together to care for our patients.”
At Covenant Health, you’ll find a supportive and fulfilling workplace where you can flourish and find your calling to serve. If you’re looking to make a difference, see the opportunities that await you at St. Mary’s Hospital.
